Pirații de la Visions of Atlantis fac o escală la malul Mării Negre : interviu cu căpitanul Michele Guaitoli

Cu hărțile bine puse la punct și busola fixată pe metal simfonic cu iz cinematografic, Visions of Atlantis se pregătește să ia cu asalt scena festivalului Odyssea Rock Fusion care va avea loc la Venus între 25-27 iunie. L-am abordat pe Michele Guaitoli, vocalistul trupei și principalul compozitor, la o discuție despre cum scrie povești cu pirați pe portativ și despre cum își adaptează vocea în funcție de aventurile de pe hartă, împreună cu Clémentine Delauney, alături de care conduce corabia Visions of Atlantis.

Salut, Michele, și bine ai venit la Metalfan România. Este a doua oară când trupa Vision of Atlantis apare în publicația noastră — am intervievat-o pe Melissa [Ferlaak, fosta solistă] în 2007. (citește interviul)
Salutare! A trecut ceva timp de atunci! Acum e a treia oară când Visions of Atlantis vine în România cu aceeași componență: am cântat cu Powerwolf în 2022, apoi la SeaWolves Bike Fest anul trecut, iar acum suntem bucuroși să revenim la Odyssea anul acesta!!!

Visions of Atlantis a evoluat semnificativ de la ultimul nostru interviu. Cum ai descrie identitatea muzicală actuală a trupei?
Cu siguranță ne-am schimbat mult. Din 2018, când componența actuală a formației s-a stabilizat, ne-am creat cu adevărat o nouă identitate. Suntem în continuare o trupă de metal simfonic, dar am decis să ne urmăm pasiunea și dragostea pentru universul mării, adoptând pe deplin tematica piraților. Nu suntem singura formație de pirate metal (mai sunt Alestorm, Running Wild și altele), dar suntem singurii care aduc acest univers în metalul simfonic. Ne considerăm o trupă „cinematografică”, piesele noastre se apropie de coloanele sonore de film, iar versurile noastre sunt povești cu pirați. Cred că asta descrie destul de bine ceea ce facem în prezent!

Temele nautice și fantastice sunt o parte importantă din identitatea Visions of Atlantis — cât de implicat ești în conturarea acestor concepte?
Sunt foarte implicat, pentru că sunt principalul compozitor. Tot albumul Pirates II – Armada a fost imaginat de mine, iar mai mult de jumătate din Pirates, discul anterior, este tot exprimarea mea muzicală. Dar este clar o muncă de echipă cu Clémentine, care scrie versurile, contribuie la multe dintre liniile melodice și este responsabilă de partea vizuală: poveștile videoclipurilor și tot ce ține de storytelling. Practic, eu îi ofer muzica pe care ea scrie povestea. E o colaborare extraordinară!

Ne poți descrie procesul vostru de compoziție — pornești de la melodii, versuri sau o temă mai amplă?
Întotdeauna încep cu melodiile. Practic, prima dată îmi vin în minte melodiile pieselor pe care le auziți pe albume… și de la ele încep să îmi imaginez aranjamentele orchestrale, chitarele, tobele. Când piesa prinde formă în mintea mea, mă duc în studio și încep să fac un demo, scriind și cântând părțile de chitară, bas, orchestrația, tobele cu softurile mele. Și înregistrez primele demo-uri vocale cu versuri provizorii. Apoi, de obicei îi cer și lui Clémentine să înregistreze cu versuri provizorii, ca să ne asigurăm că totul funcționează pe vocea ei. Abia după toate astea, dacă piesa e aprobată (pentru că uneori renunțăm complet la anumite melodii!), Clémentine începe să își imagineze o poveste, inspirându-se din atmosfera muzicală.

Există compozitori clasici sau autori de coloane sonore care îți influențează alegerile muzicale sau vocale?
Sunt mulți! John Williams și Hans Zimmer sunt, evident, cei doi compozitori de film care mă inspiră cel mai mult. Și îmi plac foarte mulți compozitori de muzică simfonică, atât clasici (Bach, Beethoven, Clementi, Schumann…), cât și moderni (Ludovico Einaudi, de exemplu). Dar mă inspir și din musicaluri: Andrew Lloyd Webber, de exemplu.

Interacțiunea vocală dintre tine și Clémentine Delauney e una dintre caracteristicile definitorii ale trupei – sunteți cel mai stabil duo al formației, dacă nu mă înșel. Cum abordați această dinamică în procesul de înregistrare?
Cred că e ceva ce am dezvoltat în timp, pe scenă. Când m-am alăturat trupei în 2018 și am început să cânt cu Clémentine, interpretam piese scrise pentru alți soliști și era pentru prima dată când ne combinam vocile. Am început imediat să ne „studiem” reciproc, să înțelegem stilul de interpretare al celuilalt, pentru a avea cât mai multă armonie și consistență împreună. Concert după concert, album după album, a devenit din ce în ce mai natural, până în punctul în care practic cântăm ca o singură voce. Cred că „duetul nostru vocal” este ceea ce face Visions of Atlantis special. Nu multe trupe au doi soliști cu voce clean, iar stilul nostru inspirat de storytelling ne permite o mare libertate de expresie…

Ți s-a schimbat tehnica vocală sau abordarea de când ai intrat în Visions of Atlantis, comparativ cu prestația ta din Temperance – unde cânți power metal?
Unul dintre marile avantaje ale faptului că activez în mai multe trupe este tocmai diversitatea. Fiecare trupă are propria identitate, iar stilul meu vocal se adaptează de la una la alta, ceea ce îmi permite să „mă joc” cu vocea mea și să îmi schimb abordarea. Deci, da: sunt multe lucruri pe care le fac în Temperance și nu le fac în Visions of Atlantis –  și invers. Visions of Atlantis se bazează pe o abordare teatrală. E foarte amuzant, pentru că trebuie constant să îmi schimb stilul de interpretare: mai agresiv când joc rolul unui pirat rebel, mai delicat când cânt o baladă marinărească, mai intens când e vorba de aventuri grandioase. În Temperance e cu totul altceva, totul e axat pe crearea unei armonii vocale spectaculoase între cele trei voci ale trupei!

Veți cânta la Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival (Venus, România, 25–27 iunie). Care este cea mai mare diferență între a cânta într-un festival și într-un concert unde Visions of Atlantis e cap de afiș?
Festivalurile sunt fantastice pentru că îți permit mereu să cânți în fața unui public numeros și îți oferă șansa de a face trupa cunoscută. La un festival nu toți știu de Visions of Atlantis, și asta e foarte bine, pentru că e o excelentă ocazie de promovare. Intrăm pe scenă știind că trebuie să cucerim publicul, să-i „transformăm în pirați”. Când cântăm în concerte ca headlineri, oamenii vin special pentru noi. Suntem motivul pentru care au cumpărat bilete, așa că probabil cunosc piesele de la cap la coadtă. După cum îți dai seama, abordarea e complet diferită, nu doar mental, ci și ca prestație scenică. La festivaluri cântăm mai puțin, trebuie să selectăm setlistul cu grijă, avem un timp scurt să arătăm ce avem mai bun. E solicitant, dar și foarte distractiv!

Ați mai cântat la un festival pe malul mării până acum? Ca pirat, mă aștept ca briza sărată să-ți dea un plus de forță în plămâni, haha.
O, nu doar că am cântat lângă mare, dar am și cântat pe mare: am avut onoarea să participtăm de două ori la 70.000 Tons of Metal și o dată la Sabaton Cruise. Mai ales la 70.000 Tons of Metal, pe puntea exterioară, sus pe vas, să cânți cu marea în jurul tău – pentru o trupă ca a noastră este pur și simplu fantastic. Am mai cântat și lângă mare la Full Metal Holiday… deci nu suntem la prima experiență de acest gen. Dar va fi prima dată când cântăm la mare în România, așteptăm cu nerăbdare!!!

În ce direcție crezi că se va îndrepta muzical Visions of Atlantis în următorii ani?
Cred că ultimele două albume ne-au ajutat să facem pași importanți înainte. Ne-am găsit propria identitate muzicală și propriul stil, iar oamenii încep să asocieze direct muzica noastră cu trupa noastră. Poate pare mare lucru, dar nu mereu e de la sine înțeles. Gândește-te câte trupe de power metal asculți fără să știi imediat „a, e trupa aia”. La fel și cu multe trupe de metal simfonic. Datorită ultimelor două albume cred că e ușor acum să-ți dai repede seama spui „a, ăștia sunt Visions of Atlantis” doar ascultând câteva secunde. Trebuie doar să ne consolidăm această identitate. Deci trebuie să continuăm în aceeași direcție, dar cu piese din ce în ce mai bune.

Există un „risc” muzical sau o direcție experimentală pe care ai vrea să o încerci pe următorul album?
Sincer să fiu, partea dificilă este să te reînventezi, să nu repeți același album iar și iar, dar în același timp să rămâi coerent cu stilul tău muzical. Multe trupe au fost criticate de fani pentru că s-au îndepărtat de stilul lor inițial. În același timp, multe formații au fost criticate pentru că au devenit plictisitoare repetând aceleași formule. Este o provocare majoră care uneori necesită experimente. Scopul nostru este să păstrăm muzica fresh, dar fără să ne îndepărtăm de zona metalului simfonic – pentru că asta ne place să cântăm și să compunem. Cu siguranță vom încerca să aducem ceva nou genului, ceea ce cere experimente, dar în același timp trebuie să fim atenți și să respectăm muzica pe care o iubim!

Ai vreo colaborare de vis – fie din scena metal, fie din afara ei – pe care ți-ai dori să o realizezi?
Oh, întrebarea asta ne este pusă des și e mereu greu să răspundem. Așa că știi ce? Voi da un răspuns amuzant, care probabil nu se va întâmpla niciodată. Ar fi fantastic să colaborăm cu Johnny Depp. E chitarist și vocal, dar e și cel mai faimos pirat al epocii moderne. Așa că de ce nu?

The Austrian pirates of Visions of Atlantis make a stop on the shores of the Black Sea: interview with captain Michele Guaitoli

With their maps charted and the compass set firmly on symphonic metal with a cinematic touch, Visions of Atlantis are preparing to storm the stage at Odyssea Rock Fusion, taking place in Venus between June 25–27. We caught up with Michele Guaitoli, the band’s vocalist and main composer, to talk about writing pirate tales on sheet music and adapting his voice to match the adventures on the map — alongside Clémentine Delauney, with whom he steers the Visions of Atlantis ship.

Hello to you! Quite some time has passed since back then! This is the third time that VoA comes to Romania with this Line-up though: We played with Powerwolf in 2022, then at SeaWolves Bikefest last year, and now we’re happy to be back at Oyssea this year!!!

But Visions of Atlantis has evolved significantly since our previous interview. How would you describe the current musical identity of the band?
We definitely changed a lot. Since 2018, when the new line-up of the band finally established and never changed, we truly developed a new identity. We’re still a Symphonic Metal band, but we decided to follow our passion and our love for the world of the sea, fully jumping into the Pirate-theme. We are not the only “Pirate-Metal” bands for sure (Alestorm, Running Wild & others) but we’re the only ones who bring this universe in the Symphonic Metal. We consider ourselves a “cinematic” band, meaning that our songs want to be close to movie-soundtracks, and our lyrics want to be pirate-tales. I think this describes pretty well what we are doing nowadays!

The nautical and fantasy themes are a big part of Visions of Atlantis’ identity—how involved are you in shaping those concepts?
Me personally: I am the main songwriter. The entire “Pirates II – Armada” album comes from my inspiration, and more than half of “Pirates”, our previous record is also my musical expression. But this is absolutely a combined work with Clémentine, as she is the ones that writes the lyrics, she contributes in many melodies and she is the one who develops the visuals, the stories of our videos and everything that concerns our “storytelling” aspect. Basically I provide here with music on which she can write our story. It’s a great collaboration!

Can you walk us through your songwriting process — do you start with melodies, lyrics, or a broader thematic concept?
I always start with melodies. Basically what comes to my mind are the melodies of the songs that you can listen in the records…and from these melodies I start imagining the orchestral arrangements, the guitars, the drums. When the song is shaped in my mind, I put myself on my computer, in my studio, and I start putting down a demo, writing and playing the guitar parts, the bass, writing the orchestra, writing the drums with my softwares and recording my first vocal demos with fake lyrics. Then I normally ask Clémentine if she can record her voice too, with fake lyrics, so that we can make sure that everything works on her voice. It’s only after all of this that, when the song is approved (as sometimes we just discard songs that we decide not to keep for the record!!!), Clémentine starts imagining a story, getting inspired by the musical atmosphere of the song.

Are there any classical composers or film score artists that influence your vocal or musical choices?
There’s plenty of them! John Williams and Hans Zimmer are obviously the two film score artists that inspire me the most, and there are so many classical composers that I love, both from the classical world (Bach, Beethoven, Clementi, Schumann…) as well as modern ones (Ludovico Einaudi, to mention one..). But a lot of inspiration also comes from the musicals: I must mention Andrew Lloyd Webber, for instance…

Your vocal interplay with Clémentine Delauney is one of the band’s defining features — you are the band’s most stable duo, if I’m not wrong. How do you approach that dynamic during the recording process?
I think this is something that we developed with time, live. When I joined the band in 2018, and I started singing with Clémentine, I was singing songs written for other singers, and it was our first time mixing our voices. We immediately started to “study” each other, to understand each other’s way of singing to try to be the most in harmony and consistent together. Concert by concert, record after record, it became more and more natural, up to the point in which we basically sing as one. I believe that our “vocal duo” is what makes Visions of Atlantis special. Not many bands have two clean singers, and our storytelling-music inspire our way of singing and gives us a lot of form of expression…

Has your vocal technique or approach changed since joining Visions of Atlantis, compared to your performance in Temperance – a power metal band?
This is a wonderful aspect of playing in different bands. Each band has its own identity, and my way of singing changes from band to band, allowing me to “play” with my voice and change my approach. So yes: there’s a lot that I do in Temperance that I don’t do in Visions of Atlantis, and at the same time there’s a lot in Visions of Atlantis that I don’t do in Temperance. VoA is based on the theatrical approach. It’s extremely fun because I constantly need to change my way of singing: more aggressive when I take the role of a rebellious pirate, more delicate when I’m singing a dreamy sea-chant, more intense when I sing of mighty adventures. With Temperance is totally different as everything is more based on making the three-voices of the band pyrotechnic and fun!

You will perform at Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival (Venus, Romania, June 25-27). What’s the biggest difference between playing in a festival setting versus a headlining show for Visions of Atlantis?
Festivals are amazing because they always allow you to play in front of great audiences, and they allow you to make people discover the band. Not everyone at a festival know Visions of Atlantis, and this is great as it’s a fantastic promotion. We jump on stage knowing that we will need to conquer people, that we’ll need to “convert to piracy” the audience. When you play headline shows, people come for you. You are the reason why they bought a ticket, so they’ll probably know the songs from the very first to the last one. As you can understand, for this reason, the approach is completely different, not only mentally but also in terms of performance. At festival you play less, and you have to select the setlist carefully, you have a short time to give your very best. It’s challenging, and at the same time it’s great fun!

Did you ever play in festival by the sea before? As a pirate, I would expect the salty breeze to give your lungs an extra boost, haha.
Oh not only we played by the sea, but we even played on the sea: we had the honour to perform a couple times at the 70.000 tons of Metal, and once at the Sabaton Cruise. Especially at the 70.000tons, on the outdoor deck on top of the ship, performing with the sea all around you for a band like ours is just fantastic. We also played next to the sea at the Full Metal Holiday…so we are not new to these experiences. But this will be the very first time in Romania, and it’s definitely exciting!!!

What direction do you see Visions of Atlantis heading musically in the next few years?
I strongly believe that the last two records made us take great steps forward compared to where we were before. We found our own musical identity and our own style, and people start to make a direct connection between our music and our band. This might sound obvious, but it’s not to be taken for granted. Think of how many power-metal bands you listen to, without the immediate click that makes you say “ah, this is that band”. Think of how many symphonic metal bands suffer of the same issue, and this goes for every style, from metalcore to black metal. With these last two albums it starts to be easy to say “this is Visions of Atlantis” just by listening to a few seconds of our songs. We gotta reinforce our musical identity even more. So we just gotta keep on going in the same direction, offering better and better songs.

Is there a musical risk or experiment you’re eager to take on the next album?
Well, to be very honest the difficult part is renewing yourself to avoid repeating the same album all over again, at the same time remaining coherent with your musical style. A lot of bands got criticised by their fans, through the years, because they drifted away from their musical style. At the same time, a lot of bands got criticised because they got boring repeating the same record all over again. This is a great challenge that sometimes require experiments. Our goal is to always keep our music fresh, but at the same time without going away from the Symphonic Metal jar as this is the music we love to play and to compose. For sure we’ll try to bring something new to the genre, and this requires experiments, but at the same time we gotta be careful and respect and honour the music we love!

Any dream collaboration—within or outside the metal scene—you’d love to make happen?
Oh well, this question is something we get often and it’s always really hard to reply. So you know what? I’ll reply with a funny dream, that will probably never happen. It would be fantastic to collaborate with Johnny Depp. He is a guitarist and a singer, and he is the most famous pirate of the modern age. So why not?
