Alterium: Odiseea lor muzicală trece pe la Odyssea

Alterium este o trupă tânără, dar formată din muzicieni cu vechime în scenă – un proiect nou, născut din dorința de a merge mai departe și de a spune alte povești. Într-o scenă power metal tot mai aglomerată, unde trupele cu voci feminine nu mai sunt o raritate, Nicoletta Rosellini mizează pe sinceritate și autenticitate. Pentru ea, asta e diferența reală: să rămână conectată cu ceea ce transmite, să fie ea însăși în tot ce face. Alterium îmbină power metal-ul modern cu influențe simfonice și fantasy, inspirându-se din mituri, jocuri video și lumi imaginare pentru a construi piese ca niște povești. Nu e întâmplător că peste câteva zile îi vom vedea pe malul mării, la Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival (26–28 iunie), un loc perfect pentru o trupă al cărei imaginar liric include și mitologia greacă – o odisee muzicală în toată regula.

Salut, Nicoletta, și bine ai venit la Metalfan România! E primul nostru interviu împreună, așa că pentru cititorii noștri va fi o introducere scurtă, dar intensă, în universul Alterium. Cum a luat naștere trupa și ce ți-ai dorit să faci diferit față de proiectele anterioare?
După ce s-a încheiat aventura cu trupa precedentă [Kalidia – n.n.], am simțit că mai am multe de spus și că e momentul perfect să pornesc un proiect nou, alături de niște muzicieni super talentați. Privind în urmă, cred că ar fi trebuit să fac pasul ăsta mai devreme! Între noi există o chimie puternică, care a dus rapid la un sound bine conturat. Stilistic, am rămas în zona power metal-ului modern cu influențe simfonice, dar fiecare aduce ceva personal, și așa s-a născut identitatea Alterium.

Așa cum spuneai, muzica Alterium îmbină power metal-ul clasic cu influențe mai moderne. Ce trupe v-au inspirat când ați conturat direcția muzicală?
Ne inspirăm în principal din scena europeană de power metal – trupe ca Rhapsody, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica sau Kamelot au avut un impact mare asupra noastră. În același timp, fiecare vine cu preferințele proprii: unii sunt fani heavy metal clasic din anii ’80, alții trag spre rock progresiv sau metal mai modern.

Cum decurge procesul de compoziție la voi? Vine mai întâi muzica sau versurile?
De cele mai multe ori pornim de la muzică. Începem cu un riff, o linie melodică sau chiar un aranjament aproape complet. Când simțim că avem o bază solidă, încep să lucrez la linii vocale și versuri. Totuși, sunt momente când o idee lirică sau o frază îmi declanșează inspirația și de acolo se dezvoltă o piesă. E un proces colaborativ și viu, și îmi plac ambele direcții.

Din punct de vedere liric și tematic, ce vrei să transmiți prin muzica Alterium?
Ne plac mult temele epice: mitologie (greacă, orientală, egipteană), dar și universuri inspirate din jocuri video fantasy, cum ar fi World of Warcraft sau Crossroads’ Inn. Avem și piese mai personale, așa că sursele de inspirație pot veni din orice: cărți, filme, jocuri, experiențe de viață.

Albumul vostru de debut, Of War and Flames, are o producție foarte curată și bine pusă la punct. Ne poți povesti puțin despre procesul de înregistrare și colaborările din studio?
Mulțumim! Ne-am dorit mult ca sunetul să reflecte energia trupei și să fie clar, dar puternic. Am lucrat cu Lars Rettkowitz (Freedom Call), care s-a ocupat de producție și mix. Colaborasem și la ultimul album Kalidia, așa că știa exact ce ne dorim și a reușit să ne ajute să dăm contur unui sound propriu. A fost o experiență intensă, dar totul a mers foarte bine, am avut noroc să lucrăm cu oameni pasionați și profesioniști. Masterizarea a fost realizată de Achim Köhler.

Ai abordat altfel partea vocală în Alterium față de Kalidia sau Walk in Darkness?
La bază e un stil destul de apropiat de ce făceam în Kalidia, dar între timp am mai crescut și am acumulat multă experiență. Acum pot gândi mai clar liniile vocale încă din fazele inițiale ale piesei. În schimb, în Walk in Darkness interpretez piese compuse de Shaman (creierul proiectului), așa că acolo lucrurile sună complet diferit față de ce fac în Alterium.

Trupele cu vocaliste sunt tot mai numeroase, mai ales în genul vostru. Simți presiunea de a ieși în evidență sau te iei mai ușor?
Haha, da, e adevărat! Dar încerc să nu pun prea multă presiune pe mine. Pentru mine contează să fiu autentică, sinceră cu ce vreau să transmit și să evoluez constant ca artist. Cred că oamenii simt când faci lucrurile cu pasiune și se conectează mai ușor cu muzica. Evident, e important să ieși în evidență, dar totul pleacă de la calitatea muzicii. Muzica rămâne peste timp.

Ce planuri aveți cu Alterium în următorul an sau doi – din punct de vedere creativ, muzical sau al turneelor?
Lucrăm deja la materiale noi: în iulie 2025 lansăm un EP, iar al doilea album e aproape complet compus. Avem și o serie de concerte în vara și toamna asta, inclusiv un turneu alături de Fabio Lione’s Dawn of Victory. Unul dintre obiectivele noastre e să construim o comunitate solidă de fani, iar concertele sunt cheia în direcția asta. Suntem foarte entuziasmați!

Veți urca pe scena festivalului Odyssea Rock Fusion (Venus, România, 26–28 iunie). Ce diferențe simți între un concert la festival și un show propriu?
Festivalurile au o atmosferă aparte – cânți în fața unui public divers, pe aceeași scenă cu multe trupe mari, iar energia e fantastică! E altceva decât un concert propriu: ai un set mai scurt și în fața ta sunt mulți oameni care poate nu te cunosc (încă!). Tocmai asta e partea interesantă : e o provocare și o ocazie să-i cucerești pe loc!

Ați mai avut ocazia să cântați la un festival pe malul mării?
Chiar dacă avem o carieră destul de scurtă, pot să spun că da! Anul trecut am cântat la Rimini Comix, un festival tip comicon din Italia care include și concerte. Era scena așezată astfel încât vedeai marea în față, o senzație de neuitat! Abia așteptăm să retrăim asta la Odyssea și să sărim pe scenă !

Ai un mesaj pentru cei care vor fi în public la Odyssea?
Abia așteptăm să ne întâlnim cu voi la Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival! E prima dată când ajungem în România și suntem super entuziasmați! Vom aduce un show plin de energie, cu piese de pe Of War and Flames, dar și câteva în premieră de pe viitorul EP,  plus câteva surprize. Ne vedem în fața scenei, da?

Alterium at Odyssea: a Heroine of the Power Metal Sea Comes Ashore

Alterium is a young band, but its members are no strangers to the scene – this is a fresh project born out of the desire to move forward and tell stories that didn’t quite fit in their previous musical ventures. In a power metal landscape that’s increasingly crowded, especially with female-fronted bands, Nicoletta Rosellini chooses to stand out through sincerity and authenticity. For her, that’s what truly makes the difference: staying connected to what you express and being true to yourself in every note. Alterium blends modern power metal with symphonic and fantasy elements, drawing inspiration from mythology, video games, and imaginary worlds to create songs that feel like epic tales. And in just a few days, they’ll bring this storytelling spirit to the seashore at Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival (June 26–28) – a fitting setting for a band whose lyrics are also steeped in Greek mythology. A musical odyssey, indeed!

Hi, Nicoletta, and welcome to Metalfan Romania. It’s our first interview, so I guess it’ll be a very intense introduction to the Alterium world. What led to the formation of Alterium, and what did you want to do differently with this band compared to your past work?
After the split of my previous band [Kalidia – n.n.], I felt that I still had something to say, and that I could take this “opportunity” to form a new project with musicians of a very high level. Looking back, I think this should have happened much earlier! There’s a strong chemistry between us, and that has quickly led to great results. Musically, we stayed within the realm of modern power metal with symphonic influences, but each of us brings something personal to the table, shaping Alterium’s sound.

As you said, Alterium’s sound combines traditional power metal with modern elements. What were your main musical influences when shaping the band’s style?
Our biggest inspirations come from the European power metal scene, bands like Rhapsody, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, and Kamelot definitely influenced us. But each of us also brings different tastes and genres into the band: some are really into ’80s heavy metal, others love prog rock and metal, and some prefer more modern productions.

How does the songwriting process work in Alterium? Do you write the lyrics first, or does the music usually come first?
Usually, the music comes first. We start from instrumental ideas (riffs, melodies, or full arrangements) and once we have a solid structure, I begin working on the vocal lines and lyrics. Sometimes, though, a lyrical concept or a specific phrase will inspire a song from the very beginning. It’s a dynamic and collaborative process, and I enjoy both approaches.

Lyrically and thematically, what are the key ideas or messages you aim to convey through Alterium’s music?
We love our themes to be epic. You’ll find songs inspired by mythology (Greek, Eastern, Egyptian) as well as tracks influenced by fantasy video games like World of Warcraftor Crossroads’ Inn. But there’s also space for more intimate and personal songs. Honestly, anything I read, see, play, or experience in life can become a source of inspiration.

Your debut album “Of War and Flames” has a very polished production. Can you tell us more about the recording process and the team you worked with?
Thank you! We really wanted the production to reflect the energy and clarity of our sound. We worked with Lars Rettkowitz (Freedom Call) for production and mixing. We already worked on the latest Kalidia album together, so he understood perfectly what we were aiming for and helped us shape a powerful yet refined sonic identity. The recording process was intense but smooth, we were lucky to work with such a passionate and skilled person. Master was handled by Achim Koheler.

Did you approach the vocal arrangements differently for Alterium compared to your work in Kalidia or Walk in Darkness?
It’s very similar to what I did with Kalidia in the past but we can say that I have gained tons of experience since then. I can now write and arrange better vocal lines from the beginning. Instead, in Walk in Darkness, I just sing what the mastermind Shaman wrote for me and that’s why it sounds so different from what I usually do with Alterium.

The world of bands fronted by female vocalists (especially in your genre) is getting quite crowded. Do you feel any pressure to walk any extra mile to stand out or you’re rather relaxed about it, haha?
Haha, it’s true! But honestly, I try not to overthink it. I just focus on being authentic, staying true to my artistic vision, and constantly improving as a performer and as a songwriter. If you’re genuine and passionate about what you do, I believe people will feel that and connect with your music. Of course, standing out is important, but I think it’s more about writing good music. Music will last forever!

What are your goals for Alterium in the next year or two, musically, creatively, or in terms of touring?
We’re already working on new music: we’ll release a new EP in July 2025 and the songwriting for the second album is coming to conclusion. We have shows planned for summer and autumn, including a tour supporting Fabio Lione’s Dawn of Victory. One of our main goals is to grow a solid and loyal fanbase, especially through live performances. We’re really excited about what the future holds!

You will perform at Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival (Venus, Romania, June 26-28). What’s the biggest difference between playing in a festival setting versus your own show?
Festivals are such a unique experience: you share the stage with many great bands, there’s a diverse audience, and the energy is often off the charts! It’s different from headlining your own show because you usually play a shorter set and perform for many people who might not know you yet. That makes it even more exciting: it’s your chance to win them over!

Did you ever play in festival by the sea before?
Even if our career is short, we can say “yes”! Last year we performed at Rimini Comix, it’s an Italian comicon festival that also includes concerts. You could see the sea from the stage! We are looking forward to experience this again in few days at Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival, and what a stage we will jump on!

Any messages you’d like to send to the Odyssea Festival goers?
We can’t wait to meet you all at Odyssea Rock Fusion Festival, it will be our very first time performing in Romania, and we’re beyond excited! We’re preparing a powerful set that will include songs from our debut album Of War and Flames, but also, for the very first time, some brand new material from our upcoming EP, along with a few special surprises. See you in the front row!
