Medusian: de la Stockholm la Alba Iulia, o odisee emoțională prin metal simfonic extrem

Chiar dacă Medusian e o trupă destul de nouă, membrii ei au deja ceva experiență muzicală. Fondatorii Mitchell Colbert (voce) și Isak Asplund (tobe) cântă și în Syndr, printre alte proiecte. Basistul Daniel Österberg e parte din Sonic Assault, iar chitaristul Rasmus Edström e cunoscut pentru preluările metal pe care le postează pe rețelele sociale. Trupa suedeză reușește să îmbine armonios orchestrările grandioase cu întunecimea și agresivitatea tipică Death și Black Metal-ului. Muzica lor te poartă într-o călătorie emoțională, fiecare piesă având o atmosferă aparte. Am stat de vorbă cu ei despre începuturi și despre ce ne așteaptă la primul lor concert în această formulă, care va avea loc la festivalul Symphonic Metal Echoes, între 22 și 24 august, la Alba Iulia.

Salut, Medusian! Din moment ce acesta este primul vostru interviu pentru Metalfan, ați putea să le spuneți cititorilor noștri (care poate nu sunt foarte familiarizați cu muzica voastră) cum s-a format Medusian și cum ați ajuns să vă conturați stilul muzical?
Totul a început cu Mitchell, care înregistra demo-uri în studioul său de acasă, experimentând cu straturi simfonice aplicate peste stilul de riff-uri și de structură a pieselor pe care le dezvoltase de-a lungul anilor. În cele din urmă, când Isak și primul nostru basist, Richard, i s-au alăturat, multe dintre părțile de tobe au fost restructurate, liniile de bas ajustate, iar în anumite cazuri piesele au fost refăcute pentru a se potrivi stilurilor de interpretare ale fiecăruia dintre noi. Este o combinație între experiența noastră de fani melodic death metal, fani power metal, preferința pentru coloane sonore simfonice grandioase și dorința puternică de a exprima sentimente și experiențe de viață prin povești spuse într-un mod care implică multă imaginație.

Despre muzica voastră s-a fost spus că îmbină orchestrații bombastice cu întunecimea și duritatea Death/Black Metal-ului, creând o călătorie emoțională pentru ascultător. Sunteți de acord cu această descriere sau ați vrea să adăugați ceva? Cum ați descrie stilul vostru cuiva care ascultă Medusian pentru prima dată?
E o descriere foarte interesantă. Cred că încercăm mereu să avem orchestrații grandioase și să le folosim pentru a provoca emoțiile ascultătorului cât mai mult posibil, dată fiind versatilitatea lor. Punem foarte mult accent pe ideea de călătorie emoțională prin muzică și pe faptul că nicio piesă nu începe și nu se termină cu aceeași atmosferă — trebuie să existe o schimbare acolo. Sincer, nu cred că am putea spune mai bine decât o face această descriere!

Ce trupe sau artiști v-au inspirat să urmați această direcție muzicală?
Suntem un amestec uriaș de influențe muzicale. Dacă vorbim despre Medusian ca entitate, la început ne-am inspirat în mare parte din zona simfonică, de la trupe precum Seven Spires și Fleshgod Apocalypse. Individual, ne tragem influențele din preferații noștri: Devin Townsend, Dimmu Borgir, Insomnium, Obscura, Cradle of Filth, SepticFlesh, dar nici importanța unor trupe clasice precum Metallica și Iron Maiden nu poate fi subestimată.

Cum iau naștere noile piese Medusian? Sunt compuse în principal de un singur membru sau e un proces colaborativ?
La început, compunea doar Mitchell, pentru că Medusian era un proiect nou pe care îl punea pe picioare, iar tobele și basul erau scrise de Isak și Richard în colaborare cu el. Acum, pe măsură ce lucrăm la materiale noi, procesul este colaborativ: fiecare membru vine cu idei de piese, care apoi sunt puse cap la cap de Mitchell, într-un mod care să sune a Medusian, să inspire versurile potrvite pentru ca piesele să transmită acea atmosferă specifică Medusian și să permită suprapunerea orchestrării lui. Să scriem impreună, ca o echipă este o etapă nouă și incitantă pentru noi și o experiență care ne entuziasmează.

Ce vă inspiră cel mai mult atunci când scrieți versurile? Și care sunt autorii voștri preferați sau cei care v-au influențat cel mai mult?
Versurile sunt inspirate din multe subiecte cu puternică rezonanță emoțională construite pe experiențe reale de viață, fie că e vorba de pierdere, speranța pentru o viață mai bună, înțelegerea propriei arte, frici sau orice altceva. Modul în care sunt transmise aceste idei este prin povești fictive (adesea cu elemente de fantezie). Printre preferați se numără în primul rând trupe precum Seven Spires și Devin Townsend, dar o influență majoră asupra versurilor o au și artiști ca Marina and the Diamonds și Kendrick Lamar. De asemenea, ne inspirăm mult din scenario de jocuri video și filme, precum și din alte forme de artă.

Se pare că există o oarecare confuzie, întrucât pe Spotify și Encyclopaedia Metallum apar două EP-uri, dar voi ați menționat că până acum a fost lansat doar unul. Ne-ați putea clarifica situația și face o scurtă prezentare a discografiei voastre de până acum?
Da, absolut, ne-am confruntat cu asta de câteva ori. Practic, atunci când am lansat toate single-urile care pregăteau apariția EP-ului Library, fiecare nou single includea și piesele anterioare, pentru ca fanii să aibă acces ușor atât la melodia nouă, cât și la cele deja lansate. Spotify nu îți oferă opțiunea să marchezi clar o lansare ca single sau ca EP, așa că materialul este etichetat automat după cum aleg ei. Cum conțineau și alte piese, Bottom of the Well și Toymaker au fost ambele etichetate ca EP-uri, iar cineva a văzut asta și le-a trecut astfel pe Metal Archives. Deși noi nu le-am numit niciodată EP-uri, confuzia e de înțeles. Recent am reușit să rezolvăm problema pe Spotify și pe Metal Archives, iar acum este listat corect ca 4 single-uri lansate înainte de EP-ul nostru de debut, Library.

EP-ul Library, a apărut în ianuarie. Titlul stârnește curiozitatea — despre ce fel de bibliotecă este vorba? Este o colecție metaforică de povești, emoții sau experiențe?
Este, de fapt, ambele lucruri. Povestea lui Library este despre un tip închis într-o bibliotecă dintr-o altă dimensiune, care umple rafturile cu povești scrise pentru sine, ca să se distreze și să-și țină companie. În acest sens este literală, cu o tentă fantastică, dar și metaforică, prin faptul că versurile din partea de bridge dezvăluie că primele patru piese de pe EP erau, de fapt, poveștile scrise de acel personaj din Bibliotecă. Library este o metaforă pentru modul de a spune povești pe care îl folosește Mitchell și pentru felul în care narațiunea poate exprima experiențe afective pe care cuvintele, luate direct și explicate simplu, nu le-ar putea transmite la fel de bine.

Din punct de vedere muzical, de ce realizare sunteți cel mai mândri până acum?
Cred că există mai multe răspunsuri la această întrebare. EP-ul  a avut parte de o primire extraordinară din partea publicului, iar cei cărora le place chiar ne apreciază și  sunt impresionați de calitatea albumului, iar asta înseamnă enorm pentru noi, pentru că impactul muzicii noastre asupra oamenilor este extrem de important. De asemenea, faptul că am fost invitați să cântăm la un festival tocmai în România ni se pare entuziasmant! Și, în final, dacă ne gândim la realizări strict muzicale, considerăm că modul cum am armonizat diferite nuanțe și atmosfere pe EP-ul Library, păstrând în același timp coeziunea și sentimentul că este un album al unei singure trupe, este o realizare cu adevărat specială și suntem foarte mândri de asta.

Unii dintre voi sunteți implicați și în alte proiecte muzicale: Mitchell și Isak în Syndr, Daniel în Sonic Assault și Rasmus cu cover-urile sale metal populare pe rețelele sociale. Cum reușiți să vă împărțiți timpul între Medusian și aceste alte angajamente?
Pe scurt, o bună planificare este totul! Trebuie să ne asigurăm că stabilim repetițiile la momentul potrivit, cu frecvența potrivită atunci când avem ceva programat, și să comunicăm tot ce se întâmplă în celelalte proiecte atât între noi, cât și cu ceilalți membri ai trupei. Nu este deloc dificil și, până acum, nu a fost nicio problemă!

Ce vă place mai mult: experiența din studio sau concertele live?
Depinde foarte mult, pentru că fiecare dintre ele ne oferă satisfacții diferite. Concertele sunt mereu palpitante și plăcute, iar faptul că vedem oamenii față în față și reacțiile lor la muzica noastră e o experiență specială. Totuși, momentele în care stăm în studio și rafinăm muzica până la forma finală sunt și ele printre părțile cele mai consumatoare de timp ale creației artistice, și credem că ne aduc multă satisfacție și împlinire.

Unde vă vedeți peste zece ani, atât profesional, cât și personal? Cum vă imaginați parcursul vostru până atunci?
E interesant de imaginat, dar greu de răspuns! Avem planuri pentru mai multe albume și obiective pe care ne dorim să le atingem, atât pentru a ajunge pe scene noi și mai mari, cât și pentru a construi o bază de fani online în locuri pe care încă nu le-am atins. Cum ne imaginăm totul: mereu înainte și în sus, hai să vedem cât de departe putem duce acest proiect!

Cum vi se pare scena metal din Europa de Sud-Est în comparație cu cea scandinavă?
Ne este greu să spunem, pentru că suntem doar vizitatori în Europa de Sud-Est, dar unii dintre noi au mulți prieteni acolo și au călătorit în regiunea respectivă. Putem spune că pare că multe dintre trupele mai mari nu fac atât de multe turnee în această zonă, și credem că este păcat, cu cât mergi mai la sud în Europa, cu atât fanii sunt mai pasionați, chiar și atunci când primesc mai puțin. Și ăsta e un compliment, să fie clar!

Ce știți deja despre România? Care e primul lucru pe care ați vrea să-l faceți aici? Poate ceva legat de mâncare sau de vizitat?
Toți ne-am documentat despre România și despre ce locuri merită văzute! Mitchell este mare fan al bisericilor și castelelor, așa că plănuim să vizităm câteva biserici ortodoxe. Daniel vrea să vadă un castel aflat la aproximativ o oră de Alba Iulia, iar în privința mâncării, încă facem cercetări, dar sperăm să găsim un loc care să servească mâncare românească autentică, ca să putem face cu toții un o degustare serioasă!

Într-o postare pe rețelele sociale ați menționat că veți fi prezenți în toate cele trei zile ale festivalului Symphonic Metal Echoes și că veți urca pe scenă în ultima zi. Ce trupe abia așteptați să vedeți live la Alba Iulia?
Da! Abia așteptăm să vedem fiecare trupă și să descoperim ce experiențe ne aduc. Mitchell a ascultat în întregime discografiile tuturor trupelor după ce s-a anunțat afișul complet și abia așteaptă să vadă Mist of Misery și Clouds. Rasmus vrea foarte mult să vadă Symphress, iar noi toți suntem mari fani ai muncii celor de la Lamentari, așa că vom fi acolo imediat după ce terminăm să cântăm înaintea lor, duminică.

Aveți un mesaj pentru fanii metal din România, inclusiv pentru cei care încă nu s-au hotărât să participe la Symphonic Metal Echoes, ca să îi convingeți să vină să vă vadă?
Nu facem niciodată nimic la jumătate de măsură și suntem extrem de entuziasmați să vă cunoaștem pe toți și să vă dăm tot ce avem mai bun. Nu există o modalitate mai bună de a petrece un weekend decât să sărbătorești genul care ne definește pe toți.
În plus, luni seara ajungem acasă aproape de miezul nopții și marți dimineața începem lucrul de la prima oră, așa că dacă noi putem supraviețui la serviciu după o noapte târzie, și voi puteți! Faceți-o pentru Dio!

Medusian: From Stockholm to Alba Iulia, an Emotional Odyssey Through Extreme Symphonic Metal

Though Medusian is a relatively new band, its members bring a wealth of experience. Founders Mitchell Colbert (vocals) and Isak Asplund (drums) are also part of Syndr, among other projects. Bassist Daniel Österberg plays with Sonic Assault, while guitarist Rasmus Edström has gained recognition for his metal cover videos on social media. This Swedish group masterfully combines grand orchestral elements with the dark, raw intensity typical of Death and Black Metal. Their music invites listeners on an emotional journey, with each track carrying a distinct and memorable essence. We spoke with the band about their origins and what they—and we—can look forward to at their first live show in this lineup, taking place at the Symphonic Metal Echoes festival, August 22–24, in Alba Iulia.

Hello Medusian! Since this is your first interview with Metalfan, could you tell our readers (who might not be very familiar with your music) how Medusian was formed and how you developed your unique sound? 
So we started out just with Mitchell writing the demos in his home studio, experimenting with symphonic layers on the riff style and song structure he developed over the years, and ultimately when Isak and our first bassist Richard joined, a lot of the drums got restructured, basslines were adjusted, and in some contexts the songs were restructured to match the playstyles of everybody involved. It’s a blend of our experience as melodic death metal fans, power metal fans, massive symphonic soundtracks, and a lot of desire to express unique feelings and life experiences through storytelling in a way that incorporates a lot of imagination.

Your music has been described as blending majestic orchestrations with the darkness and rawness of Death/Black Metal, creating an emotional journey for the listener. Would you agree with this description, or is there anything you’d like to add? How would you describe your style to someone hearing Medusian for the first time?
That’s a really interesting way to describe it. I think we always try to keep the orchestration huge and use it to sway the emotion of the listener as much as possible, given its versatility. We really emphasize the emotional journey aspect of the music, and the idea that no song starts and ends with the same emotional atmosphere, there has to be change there. I don’t think we can say it better than that description, to be honest!

What bands or artists have inspired you to pursue this musical path?
We’re a huge blend of musical influences, if we mean Medusian as an entity it was largely drawn from symphonic influences like Seven Spires and Fleshgod Apocalypse in the beginning. For us as individuals we pull from our favorites like Devin Townsend, Dimmu Borgir, Insomnium, Obscura, Cradle of Filth, SepticFlesh, and classic bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden can’t be understated either.

How are new Medusian tracks created? Is the songwriting mainly done by one member, or is it a collaborative process?
The original songwriting was just Mitchell as it was a new project he was putting together, with the drums and bass being written by Isak and Richard in collaboration with Mitchell. Now as we’re working on new material it’s much more collaborative, with new song ideas being brought forward by every member and somewhat pieced together through Mitchell arranging the song in a way that feels like Medusian, inspires the lyrics that are essential to Medusian tracks feeling like they do, and layering his orchestration on top. Writing as a team is a new and exciting part of the band and we’re really enjoying it.

What inspires your lyric writing the most? And which authors do you consider your favorites or biggest influences?
The lyrics are inspired by a lot of emotional themes built on real life experiences, be it loss, hope for a better life, understanding one’s art, your fears, anything. The way they’re conveyed is through telling fictional (often somewhat fantasy themed) storytelling. Favorites are always bands like Seven Spires and Devin Townsend, but there’s huge lyrical influence from artists like Marina and the Diamonds and Kendrick Lamar. A lot of influence is also drawn from storytelling in video games and film, along with other kinds of art as well.

There seems to be some confusion, as Spotify and Encyclopaedia Metallum list two EPs, but you’ve mentioned only one has been released so far. Could you clarify this for us, make a short presentation of you discography so far?
Yes absolutely, we’ve run into this a couple times. Basically when we released all the singles leading up to Library [EP], the previous singles were included in each new release to give fans easy access to the previous singles as well as the new one. Spotify doesn’t give you the option to name something a single or an EP, so your work instantly gets labeled however they choose, because we had a good handful of singles, Bottom of the Well and Toymaker were both labeled EPs, someone sees that and puts it on Metal Archives. Even though we never called them EPs, the confusion is understandable. We’ve recently managed to fix it with Spotify and Metal Archives, and it’s listed as 4 singles leading up to our debut EP “Library”.

Your debut EP, Library, came out this January. The title is intriguing, what kind of library are we talking about? Is it a metaphorical collection of stories, emotions, or experiences? Are there particular themes or messages you wanted to convey through it?
So it’s both, the story of Library is about a man locked away in a Library in another dimension, filling the shelves with stories he wrote for himself, to entertain himself, and keep himself company. In that way it is literal, a bit fantastical, but it’s also metaphorical in the sense the lyrics in the bridge reveals the first 4 songs on the EP were all stories written by the man in the Library. Library is a metaphor for the storytelling approach that Mitchell uses, and the way that storytelling can express a lot of emotional ideas in a way that the words may not come properly on their own if they were simply explained at face value.

Musically speaking, what achievement are you most proud of so far?
There’s a few answers to this I think, the response to the EP has been outstanding and people who are into it really seem to believe in us and the record’s quality, and that really means a lot to us, as our music leaving an impact on people is extremely important. Being invited to come down for a festival all the way in Romania is something we think is really exciting too! And finally if we are considering musical achievements, we think the blend of different atmospheres on the Library EP, while still feeling cohesive and like one band, is a really special achievement and we’re very proud of that.

Several of you are also involved in other musical projects: Mitchell and Isak with Syndr, Daniel with Sonic Assault, and Rasmus with his popular Metal covers on social media. How do you balance your work in Medusian with these other commitments?
Scheduling is everything, basically! Being sure to arrange rehearsals at the right time, with the right frequency when we have something coming up, and communicating everything that’s going on with other projects with both each other and our bandmates. Not so bad, it hasn’t really been an issue thus far!

Which do you enjoy more: the studio experience or performing live?
Really depends, they both give really different things for us. Playing live is always exciting and fun to go out and see people face to face as they react to your music, but the sitting and refining the music to its final state is also one of the most time consuming parts of creating art, and I think that gives a lot to us in terms of fulfillment as well.

Where do you see yourselves in ten years, both professionally and personally? How do you envision your journey by then?
Such a fun thing to consider but so hard to answer! We have plans for more records and goals that we want those to achieve, both in terms of getting us on new and bigger stages as well as building a fanbase online to places we can’t reach yet. So how we envision it: onward and upward, let’s see how far we can take this!

How would you compare the South-Eastern European metal scene to the Scandinavian one?
It’s hard for us to say as we’re simply visitors in that world, but some of us have many friends from there and have traveled throughout the region. We’ll say that it seems a lot of bigger bands don’t tour the region so much, and we feel that’s a shame, the further south in Europe you go the more passionate the fans get even when there’s less given to them. Which is a compliment, to be clear!

What do you already know about Romania? And what’s the first thing you’d like to do while you’re here? Maybe something related to food or sightseeing?
We’ve all been reading about Romania and things to see and do! Mitchell is a big fan of churches and castles, so there’s some orthodox churches we plan to go see, Daniel has a castle about an hour from Alba Iulia he needs to see, and for food, we’re still researching but we’re hoping we can find somewhere that serves real Romanian food nearby so we can all do a proper test!

In a social media post, you mentioned attending all three nights of Symphonic Metal Echoes and performing on the final day. Which bands are you most excited to see live in Alba Iulia?
Yes! We’re all very excited to see every band and see what they bring, Mitchell did a long listen of every band’s discography once the full lineup was released and is looking forward to Mist of Misery and Clouds a lot, Rasmus really wants to see Symphress, and we’re all big fans of Lamentari’s work so we’ll all be there for that as soon as we’re done playing before them on Sunday.

Do you have a message for Romanian metal fans, including those who haven’t yet decided to attend Symphonic Metal Echoes, to convince them to come see your show?
We never do anything less than full effort, and we’re extremely excited to meet all of you and give you everything we’ve got. No better way to spend a weekend than celebrating the genre that is core to who we all are.

Also we’re all getting home at almost midnight on Monday evening and starting work first thing Tuesday morning, so if we can suffer at work after a late night, so can you! Do it for Dio!
